Overview
The JWST Advanced Deep Survey (JADES) is the largest deep survey program that will be executed in the first few of years of operation of JWST. Three GTO Teams (NIRCam, NIRSpec, MIRI-U.S.) have combined time to produce a survey which will ultimately cover over 100 square arc minutes from 0.7 to 5 microns and 10 square arc minutes at 7.7 microns and produce thousands of galaxy spectra. The imaging data presented here is the first release from the survey and covers the “deep” portion with imaging acquired in September - October 2022. The area covered is approximately 25 square arc minutes with exposure times per filter ranging from ~14,000 to ~60,000 seconds. These data provide large galaxy samples for studying galaxy evolution from z~1 to at least z~13, and also to study the full diversity of galaxy characteristics. A catalog with photometry and photometric redshifts is included with this release. Additionally, “FITSMap” provides a multicolor image browser and links to the photometry.

Figures 1 and 2 display the first data release area and footprints. Figure 3 shows an example of a galaxy with a photometric redshift of 1.78 that is nearly invisible to HST ACS but is seen as a well-resolved but obscured spiral to JWST.
The NIRSpec spectra presented as part of this release comprise a sample selected largely from objects detected using HST imaging of the ultra deep field (UDF). Bunker et al. 2023 describes the process of prioritizing objects to be placed on slits. About 250 galaxies were targeted using the 0.6 to 5.3 micron prism with up to 28 hours of exposure. Most of these objects were also targeted using all three R~1000 gratings and the longest wavelength R~2700 grating with up to 7 hours of exposure.
Figure 4 includes sample R~100 Clear/Prism spectra from the first data release (Bunker et al. 2023). Figure 5 displays an example preview image for a Clear/Prism spectra, which are included with this data release.
Update 06/15/23: NIRCam detection and segmentation images included with the JADES release (see below for more information).
Data Products
Images
NIRCam images are named according to the following convention:
hlsp_jades_jwst_nircam_<region>_<filter>_<version>_<exten>.fits
where:
- <region> is the imaging target region ("goods-south-deep").
- <filter> is the filter used.
- <version> is the data release version.
- <exten> is the file extension, including:
- drz : Image mosaics with pixel scale of 0.030”
- detection: "Detection" image constructed from long wavelength data and used to find objects on all the other images (see Rieke et al. 2023).
- segmentation: "Segmentation" image (based closely on Source Extractor) used to assign pixels to objects for the photometric measurements (see Rieke et al. 2023).
Spectra
The spectra in this first release are organized into five collections with each collection containing the spectra from a particular NIRSpec filter/disperser combination, and are named according to the following convention:
hlsp_jades_jwst_nirspec_<id-no>_<disperser-filter>_<version>_<extraction-type>.fits
where:
- <id-no> is a combination of the survey name ‘goods-s-deephst’ and the identification number in the input catalog. Identification numbers with leading zeros were in the original HST-based target catalog, whereas those starting with 1 were late additions from the JADES NIRCam data.
- <disperser-filter> is the combination of disperser and filter used.
- <version> is the data release version.
- <extraction-type> is the type of spectral extraction, one of "s2d" (2D spectra) or "x1d" (1D spectra).
An example spectrum file name is: hlsp_jades_jwst_nirspec_goods-s-deephst-10105275_clear-prism_v1.0_s2d.fits
Preview png files of the clear-prism spectra (1D and 2D on the same plot) are included, and named according to the following convention:
hlsp_jades_jwst_nirspec_<id-no>_<disperser-filter>_<version>_preview.png
Photometric Catalogs
The photometric catalog contains photometry for over 45,000 sources. Photometry is given in both PSF-matched (denoted by conv) and non-convolved formats. Kron photometry (denoted by "kron") is presented as well as photometry in seven circular apertures (denoted by "circ"). See the Photometric Catalog Extension Readme for more details, including detailed descriptions of table extensions. The catalog includes photometry from the JEMS program (coming soon).
Two spectroscopic catalogs are included in this release. These catalogs provide target information, redshifts and line fluxes as measured from the low-resolution prism and medium-resolution gratings. See the Spectroscopic Catalogs Readme for more details.
hlsp_jades_jwst_<instrument>_<region>_<type>_<version>_catalog.fits
where:
- <instrument> is the instrument used, one of "nircam" or "nirspec".
- <region> is the imaging target region (one of "goods-south-deep" or "goods-south-deephst").
- <type> is the type of catalog (one of "photometry", "clear-prism-line-fluxes", "gratings-line-fluxes").
- <version> is the data release version.
Data file types:
_drz.fits | NIRCam images |
_detection.fits | NIRCam detection image |

Data Access
JADES images and spectra are available in the MAST Portal (web-based, cross-mission search interface) and Astroquery (Python package to search for and download files from Python scripts you write), and via the direct download table below. Set the Provenance Name filter to JADES in the Portal Advanced Search to find all or individual images.
from astroquery.mast import Observations
all_obs = Observations.query_criteria(provenance_name="jades")
data_products = Observations.get_product_list(all_obs)
Observations.download_products(data_products)
