The Astro InstrumentsThe Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope The Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) examines far- and extreme-ultraviolet spectra, with an emphasis on the largely unexplored 900- to 1200- angstrom region and uses spectroscopy to reveal the chemistry and structure of the objects being viewed. For a larger general description of HUT click here. For a more technical description of HUT click here. The Ultraviolet Imaging TelescopeThe Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) takes detailed ultraviolet photographs of objects or areas of the sky. Before Astro, most of the sky had not been imaged in the ultraviolet spectrum. The images obtained on Astro-1 were and important step starting this process. For a larger general description of UIT click here. For a more technical description of UIT click here. The Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter ExperimentThe Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment (WUPPE) studies the way ultraviolet light is or is not polarized. This experiment is the first and most comprehensive effort to obtain polarization data in the ultraviolet spectrum. The data gathered on Astro-1 have already resulted in the refinement of several astronomical theories. For a larger general description of WUPPE click here.
