To overcome the problems discussed in §6.1 and cope with a
few other phenomena (outlined below), many kinds of image transformation
and special extraction methods were required to produce satisfactory
spectra. The extent to which good data could be recovered from awful
looking raw images was, in large part, facilitated by the stable and
predictable behavior of the system, after it was fully understood.
