Registration Policies

There is no charge for this service.

The Hubble Data Archive (HDA) is mainly intended for astronomical researchers who plan to make scientific use of the data. Access to the HDA is open to everybody but amateurs, educators, and other interested people should be aware that the format of the data may be inappropriate for most personal computer systems.

Users retrieving proprietary data should obtain a Single Sign-On (SSO) portal identity as described on our registration page. Each registrant will be provided with an archive retrieval password, which the retrieval pages in StarView or the MAST HST search interface will ask for when the user retrieves data. The archive retrieval password can be changed within StarView by using the pull-down "View" menu at the top of the screen to access "Retrieval", hitting "Submit", and then using the "Change Password" button at the bottom of the screen.

Different retrieval options are available, including ftp of the data to the user's home machine and transfer to the archive staging disk. Registering is not required for retrieving public data.
