7 FINDING AND REMOVING QUESTIONABLE DATA

The signal-to-noise ratio and suitability of a particular spectrum for your analysis can be affected by a number of factors including the conditions of the original observation, contamination of the spectral data during the observation, and the subsequent image processing of the data. For more information on observing with IUE and interpreting archival data see the IUE Observing Guide, (in NASA IUE Newsletter 32), the IUE Data Analysis Guide (in NASA IUE Newsletter 39), and How to Use IUE Data (in Exploring the Universe with the IUE Satellite, pp. 727-750).

This chapter is devoted to data quality issues that affect both IUESIPS and NEWSIPS data. For processing configuration problems specific to IUESIPS data, see Chapter 5.
