This is the first issue of the newsletter since December 1997. Though it has been the interest of the EUVE project to continue the newsletter as events warrant (e.g., on a quarterly basis), the absence of newsletter publications over the last 19 months is by no means an indication of a lack of interesting science and innovation coming out of the project. Though the project continues to operate despite shrinking mission staffing and budgetary resources, we are now redoubling our efforts to distribute the newsletter on a quarterly basis. The contents of this issue of the EUVE electronic newsletter are as follows: 1. EUVE Satellite Mission Operations News 1.1 Operations Highlights 1.2 Observation Log 1.3 Lessons Learned 2. EUVE Science News 2.1 Science Highlights 2.2 Upcoming AO for EUVE Cycle 8 2.3 EUVE Science Advisory Board FY98 Report 2.4 EUVE Right Angle Program (RAP) Report 2.5 Recent EUVE Director's Discretionary Time (DDT) Observations 2.6 Recent EUVE Calibration Observations 2.7 Recent EUVE Data Releases 2.8 EUVE Publications: April - July 1999 To comment on or make suggestions for the EUVE electronic newsletter, please send e-mail to ceanews@cea.berkeley.edu (Internet). 1 EUVE Satellite Mission Operations News ======================================== 1.1 Operations Highlights ------------------------- EUVE operations highlights for the second quarter of 1999 are: June: EUVE Spacecraft in Safe Hold Mode (SHM) EUVE Flight Operations Team Reconditions Flight Batteries EUVE Conducts Science Calibration Observations UCB Initiates Work for Potential EUVE Flight Software Patch May: EUVE Project to Support FAST and HESSI EUVE Data Analysis Network "Hacked" EUVE Distributes "Lessons Learned" Document April: EUVE Encounters Power Monitor (PMON) Timing Glitch Unusual Circumstances Lead to EUVE Course Sun Sensor (CSS) "Failure" UCB Patches EUVE Ground Software Details (including general notes and Y2K status) are available at: http://www.cea.berkeley.edu/~pubinfo/html/EUVE_operations_high_opshigh.html 1.2 Observation Log ------------------- EUVE observed 17 different targets over the second quarter of 1999 including 3C 279, 3C 345, ACO 0950, ACO 1608, ACO 1795, ACO 2149, ACO 2214, CBS 126, Coma Subcluster, EK Uma, ESO 242-G8, EUVE J1636+528, M87, the Moon, NGC 4051, RX J14226+5801, and SS Cyg. EUVE observers will be informed as soon as details are set. The general public will be informed via the Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society electronic announcements and the EUVE website. 2.3 EUVE Science Advisory Board FY98 report ------------------------------------------- The EUVE Science Advisory Board submitted its FY98 report to NASA in July 1999. The report is available at: ftp://ftp.cea.berkeley.edu/pub/reports/esab/FY98_ESAB_report_ver11.txt 2.4 EUVE Right Angle Program (RAP) Report ----------------------------------------- The EUVE project no longer supports a formal EUVE RAP(Right Angle Program) but we still take RAP data and Dr. Damian Christian - now at STScI - analyses the data through an ADP funded program. Here is status report on RAP from Dr. Christian: Our recent second RAP catalog (The Second Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Right Angle Program Catalog, D.J. Christian, N. Craig, W. Cahill, B. Roberts, R.F. Malina, AJ, 117, p. 2466, May 1999) presents the detection of 235 extreme ultraviolet sources, of which 169 were new detections. These observations covered the interval between January 1994 (end of first RAP catalog) and November 1998 with a sky coverage of 17%. This catalog also presents the discovery of a 23.7 hour period from DA white dwarf GD 394 and detections of stellar flares from about one dozen late-type stars, including the AU Mic-like flare from M star EUVE J1438-432. RAP data from November 1998 to April 1999 has been analyzed and includes ~20 source detections with about 12 new sources. Analysis of more current RAP data is continuing until this fall, and a renewal ADP was applied for. 2.5 Recent EUVE Observations on Director's Discretionary Time (DDTs) -------------------------------------------------------------------- estimated exposure awarded EUVE Obs. The bright white dwarf HZ43 was observed on May 16 and 17 using all quadrants of the Scanners and using the Spectrometers in order to test for loss of sensitivity. The white dwarf GD153 was similarly observed on 21 May using the DS/lexan imager. The bright X-ray source Sco X1 was observed on 23 May and 16 June in order to obtain the X-ray responses of the Scanner lexan and Al/Ti/C quadrants, and the DS/lexan quadrant. Analysis of these new calibration observations is now being conducted. EUVE calibration observations do not have proprietary rights. Interested parties should be able to download this data from STScI (see "Recent EUVE Data Releases" below). 2.7 Recent EUVE Data Releases ----------------------------- In response to several requests, we will again be sending you regular notices regarding releases of EUVE data. Attached is a list of data released between 1 May and 1 July 1999. For releases prior to this see http://www.cea.berkeley.edu/~science/html/Archive_pointed_newrelease.html You may search for and download data sets from STScI at http://archive.stsci.edu/cgi-bin/euve Exp.
