                         From the Editor
                         --------------

Welcome to the first edition of the Electronic Newsletter for
NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Science Payload, published
by the Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astrophysics at the Univer-
sity of California, Berkeley. We hope to issue this newsletter
on a monthly basis, but we also want to be flexible and use it to
report news about the EUVE Science Payload and events of interest
to users of the EUVE science data.

We welcome your correspondence. Please send us your comments
about this publication. Also, share this resource with your
colleagues. We are still building our mailing list, so send us
any new names and addresses of interested subscribers. If you DO
NOT want to continue receiving the newsletter, notify us at the
same address and we will remove you from the list.

Address all electronic correspondence to: pub@ssl.berkeley.edu

                                          Managing Editor

                        EUVE Launch Date
                        ----------------

The EUVE Launch Date is December 12, 1991.

                         Science Payload
                         ---------------

The EUVE Science Payload is in excellent condition. During June,
a problem developed on one of the power supplies for the on-board
ion pumps. The supply was removed and repaired and is now being
re-qualified before being re-installed. Ground operations pro-
cedures have been modified to ensure that the on-board ion pumps
are operated using the external nal supplies whenever possible.
The ion pump power supplies are used for EUVE ground operations
and In-Orbit Checkout. They will not operate during the science
phases of the EUVE mission.

Other science payload activities include final qualification of
the backup detectors and filters.

                     Guest Observer Program
                     ----------------------

Based on the launch date of December 12, 1991, the key dates for
the EUVE Guest Observer program are:

        - August 1991: release of the NASA Research Announcement

        - September 1991: Guest Observer handbook distribution

        - December 12, 1991: Launch

        - January 1992: Guest Observer Proposals due

        - May 1992: Time allocations and support announced

        - August 1, 1992: Start of EUVE Guest Observer Phase

                EUVE Science Software Development
                ---------------------------------

Rev 7.1 of the EUVE End-to-End Software has been frozen at UC
Berkeley and is currently under test prior to its release in mid
July. Rev 7.1 is the version of the code which contains all
``drop-dead'' software required for minimum operations and sci-
ence analysis requirements. The review of the Rev 7.1 software
package is scheduled for July 17 at UC Berkeley.

The next EUVE Science Operations Center and Science Staff simula-
tion is scheduled for July 11, 1991.
