Archive account changing to STScI Single Sign-On (SSO) account

Starting on April 13, 2015, the Archive will rely on the STScI Single Sign-On (SSO) system for account management and login. In the past, the Archive has relied on an internal system with archive specific accounts that applied only to archive related activities, primarily secure distribution of proprietary data. Archive logon and proprietary data retrieval were both linked to the internal archive account manager. The Archive will retain the responsibility of who is authorized to retrieve proprietary data.

The STScI SSO system relies on email address as the "account" username. Wherever you previously used your "archive account" name, you will use your email address as your new login.

Check this page to see if your archive account was transitioned to the new STScI SSO identity management system or if you need to create a new account.

What’s in it for Archive Users? show

STScI is consolidating user identities. Access to STScI services is moving to a single logon identity, the SSO credential.

Over the coming year, other services at STScI will begin to use the SSO system, including the proposal planning and tracking systems. Because the identity of the users is coming from the same source, the archive will be able to perform automatic authorization for PIs to retrieve their proprietary data.

Over the next months, we will be able to use SSO to help drive some other innovations such as saving complex searches in the MAST Portal. Eventually we will provide "subscription services". These services might include user notification when data become public, or when data with certain metadata tags become available (e.g. inform me when new observations of "QSOs" are archived).

Transition of Archive accounts show

The Archive worked to make the transition from archive accounts to STScI SSO accounts as seamless as possible for users. We also took the opportunity to clean up old unused accounts as well as accounts with disabled email addresses.

All archive accounts associated with current proprietary data that have valid email addresses were transitioned to the SSO system. In addition we transfered accounts for people who are working with teams delivering High-Level Science Products (HLSP) to the archive. Accounts which were moved will receive an email from the Archive describing the change and will be asked to reset their password. Accounts which were not transitioned will received emails asking them to sign up for a new account. Please see the details below.

Users who have proprietary data in MAST show

Your account will be transitioned to the new STScI SSO account management system. On April 13, you will receive mail that tells you how to reset your password. The already established authorization will be automatically associated with your new SSO account. It is best if the the SSO email address is the same used for proposal submission. (Once SSO is released you will be able to update your email information to make them match.)

Users who do NOT have proprietary data in MAST show

You may register for a new STScI SSO account on April 13. If you have a valid email address in the old archive system, you will receive an email telling you how to register for a new account. Users may have more than one account in the STScI SSO system but only one may be associated with proprietary data. You should sign up with the same email associated with a proposal if you have submitted one for cycle 22 onward.

We have prepared a video that illustrates the steps needed to set up a new account.

STScI employees show

No action is required for STScI employees. Your archive account (if you had one) has been merged with your STScI SSO credentials.

Consolidation of multiple Archive accounts show

For users who had multiple accounts in the archive with proprietary data rights, we have consolidated them into a single account. Emails were sent informing you of these changes.

If you had created multiple archive accounts you should have received an email to those addresses, asking you to re-register. We highly recommend having ONE identity within the STScI system.
