Information on the IUE Observing Script

The original observing scripts documenting each observation at the GSFC observing station have been scanned. VILSPA observing scripts have not been scanned. The GSFC observing scripts are grouped as pages within volumes reflecting the original notebooks in which they were kept. The entire observing script is in PDF format. Some scripts had information on the back, and for these scripts the back was also scanned.

We made an effort to assign each GSFC observation with the associated volume and page number, assuming that the pages are in chronological order. This effort was somewhat successful and those "guesses" are used point to a close approximation of the correct volume and page number. Because it proved impossible to definitely assign the correct page number, the part of the original script containing the camera/images sequence number was clipped from the image and written to gif files. Gifs are displayed on a page as links allowing the user to see the contents of the associated pdf file. In many cases, the image should be within the set of displayed gifs. If not, navigation links permit you to go forward or backward to locate the desired script.

You may encounter some of the following conditions if the volume/page guess is not accurate.

  • Backs of scripts.
While the backs of scripts could often be identified due to the somewhat smaller file size, some could not be so identified. The clipped portions of the script backs are blank or have ruled lines.
  • Scripts for FES images.
These were not included in the list of chronological observations, but the scripts are included in the scanned pages. Sometimes the gifs for for FES images have the FES camera number, but many times do not.
  • Scripts for VILSPA images.
Scripts were created for some calibration/engineering observations acquired at VILSPA. Scripts were also made for collaborative observations (those started during a GSFC shift and completed during the VILSPA shift).
  • Out of order pages.
  • Missing scripts.
