Jupiter and three of its four large moons are shown in the FES image. The volcanic moon Io is visible to the upper left, while Ganymede (larger than the planet Mercury) and Europa are seen to the lower right. Callisto, the most remote of the Jovian satellites, is outside of the field of view.

The SWP spectrum is from Jupiter's equatorial region. Molecular hydrogen and Lyman alpha emission lines may be detected in the spectrum (but not in this one). IUE and Voyager found a concentration of ionized hydrogen - the Lyman alpha bulge - in the equatorial region. IUE also studies the surface of Io, the torus of matter ejected from Io's surface which encircles Jupiter, and the aurorae in the atmosphere of Jupiter itself.
