There are different ways to search the Hubble Data Archive (HDA), and various
types of searches that can be performed. The HDA can be searched using a World
Wide Web (WWW) interface and StarView, an astronomical database browser and
research analysis tool. Users can also search the Archived Exposures Catalog
(AEC), an ASCII listing compiled from the Hubble Space Telescope archive
database. Searches can be done on object name, position, or a variety of
observational parameters. Proposal numbers, proposal abstracts, and dataset
names can also be searched on. Finally, various astronomical catalogs can
be correlated with the HDA, to look for HST data for classes of sources.
We list below the various search options.
Note FOS users should also visit the
FOS POA site for the latest FOS information (the STScI pages are seriously out of date).
This form lets you search the Archive on object name or position,
proposal, wavelength, or instrument. You may then mark and retrieve
this data from the Archive.
Both public and proprietary science data may be retrieved through this form.
This form lets you search the Archive using a list of targets or coordinates as input. The uploaded file can be simply a list of (delimited) target names or coordinates, or a multi-column table.
This is a list of all the HST target descriptions currently in use, showing you which
instruments have been used for each description. You can click on the instruments to get
a listing of datasets for that target description.
In this form, you can bring up information about a specific proposal
(title, principal investigator, abstract, published papers, etc.), along with a listing
of data archived for that proposal. You can also look up individual
obsets (visits) for a given proposal.
Both public and proprietary science data may be retrieved through this form.
If you have a list of dataset names you want to retrieve, you can
enter them in this form. Or, if your browser can do a file upload,
you can upload a file of dataset names. (This form is very cut-and-paste friendly: it can extract HST data set names
out of mail messages, paragraphs of text, etc.)
Use this form to check for possible duplications with your HST proposal.
Search the Archive using StarView
StarView is is an astronomical
database browser and research analysis tool. Developed in Java, StarView
provides an easy to use, highly capable user interface that runs on any Java
enabled platform as a standalone application. StarView can be installed on
Unix, Windows, and Macintosh platforms. Although the WWW interface is more
convenient to use, as it does not require client-server software installation
and can be accessed by any WWW browser, it does not provide all the functions
of StarView as regards HST data.
The Archived Exposures Catalog
The Archived Exposures Catalog (AEC) is a flat ASCII
file version of the HDA catalog. One can scan through it with a text
editor or other text-handling tools. The AEC provides only limited information
about HST data (and no retrieval options!). Much more information is available
through StarView or the
WWW interface.
Please note:The archive guest
account has been discontinued, so it will no longer be
possible to run StarView on the archive host machines.
