Abstract The final phase of the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, the Planetary Nebula (PN) ejection, is thought to provide the main source of carbon and nitrogen enrichment in galaxies. Stellar generations forming from a carbon- and nitrogen- enriched medium are a necessary condition for planetary and life evolution. It is essential to understand how stars go through the process of shedding their chemically- enriched shells, and to test the predictions of stellar evolution theory on the relationship between stellar mass and elemental enrichment. LMC PNe are ideal probes for this study. Their abundances can be directly related to the mass of the central stars and to that of the stellar progenitor, without the great (distance and reddening) uncertainties that affect Galactic PNe. The UV lines are essential for calculating the abundances of the element related to stellar evolution (C, N, O) and progenitor populations (e.g., Ne). We propose to acquire STIS UV spectroscopy for LMC PNe whose morphology has been previously determined with HST. We will derive the (C, N, O) abundance-to-mass relation, and determine the extent to which the mass of the progenitors of asymmetric PNe exceed that of symmetric PNe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9120( 3) - 02/13/01 09:08 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The exposures in G230L are designed to give us a ~1000 counts in C III 1909 (summed over the area of the nebula), assuming an unreddened flux that is twice that of HBeta. For bright nebulae the exposures will be significantly deeper, allowing the fainter lines (e.g., C II) to be detected. The exposures in G140L will be of the same duration, which will allow us to detect the C IV 1550 line, or (for lower ionization nebulae) to set a useful upper limit. We will acquire the NUV and FUV low dispersion spectra with a large slit (e.g., 2 arcsec), as to collect and measure all the nebular light. For objects with the highest surface brightness, this will also permit us to contrast the nebular morphology in bright lines such as C III with those in the optical (O III 5007 and HAlpha). Since all of these nebulae have been observed (in the optical) with HST, the positions and interstellar extinction are very well known. We can observe most of the nebulae in both gratings within one orbit, though a few require two orbits. In the case of SMP 48, we also request two slit-less optical spectra (with G430M and G750M), using the survey technique that proved to be efficient in our programs 8271 and 8663, to determine the nebular dimensions and morphology. We are aware that another group (PI: Henry) is submitting a STIS proposal in this HST Cycle to study UV (plus optical) spectroscopy of Galactic PNe. We are in contact with this group, and we have agreed to compare the results and analysis techniques.
