CEA's Guide for Visitors

Location

The CEA is located at 2150 Kittredge Street, in downtown Berkeley, California. The Center occupies over half of the privately-owned Oxford Court building, just west of the UC campus. The Center occupies the ground floor, the north wing of the second and third floors, and all of the fourth and fifth floors. Executive and administrative offices are located on the fourth floor south.

Getting to the Center for EUV Astrophysics

You may find these Bay Area (190 kbytes) and Berkeley (740 kbytes) maps to be useful if you are driving to the CEA.

The most convenient parking is the city parking lot across the street from CEA. These are metered spaces, however, and a certain vigilance over feeding the meter is required or you will be promptly ticketed. If you wish to park for the entire day and pay upon leaving, try Al's parking garage at the corner of Milvia and Kittredge, which is two blocks west of CEA. In general, it is best to take public transportation to CEA.

It is quite easy to get to the Center via Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) (98 kbytes), since it stops only a few blocks from CEA. BART fares vary, depending on your destination; minimum fare is 80 cents. Your ticket must be used to enter and exit the BART system. Ticket machines, change machines, and local maps are provided in all BART stations. Exit the BART system at the Berkeley BART station, which is located at Center Street and Shattuck Avenue in downtown Berkeley. Walk two blocks south on Shattuck and turn left onto Kittredge Street. CEA is near the end of the block, on the right side of the street. The information number for BART is (510) 465-2278. BART has its own WWW site here.

From the Oakland Airport:

To connect to BART from the Oakland airport terminal, take the Air-BART shuttle (fare is $2.00) and then take the Richmond BART train to the Berkeley BART station.

Taxi fare from Oakland Airport to CEA costs about $35.

By car, take Hegenberger Rd to I-880 north to downtown Oakland. Follow the signs to highway 24; all lanes but one will veer left. Take the Martin Luther King Jr. Way exit from 24 and go north about one mile. Merge into the right hand lane immediately after the third signal, at Alcatraz Avenue, and follow the lane right onto Adeline Street. Follow Adeline until it merges into Shattuck Avenue, turn left on Shattuck, and continue one mile north to downtown Berkeley. Turn right onto Kittredge Street. CEA is near the end of the block on the righthand side.

From the San Francisco Airport:

To connect to BART from the San Francisco airport terminal, take the "3X" route bus, which runs between the airport and the Daly City BART station, from 7:00am to 9;20pm Monday through Saturday, and 7:00am to 7:20pm on Sunday. Standard fare is 85 cents. At the BART station, board a Richmond-bound train, or board a Concord-bound train and transfer at the 12th Street Station.

There are also several private shuttles that operate directly between the airport and Berkeley. Reservations are required and it is best if they can be made two or three days in advance. Cost for each is about $10-$13: try Bay Area Shuttle (415) 873-7771 -- Airport Connection (415) 841-0150 or 1-800-247-7678. Taxi fare from the San Francisco Airport to CEA is about $55.

By car, take Highway 101 north to San Francisco. In downtown San Francisco, follow the signs for I-80 and the Bay Bridge to Oakland. In the East Bay, continue on I-80 to Berkeley, exit at University Avenue in Berkeley and proceed three miles east on University until you reach the campus. Turn right on Oxford Street, which borders the campus, and go several blocks. Turn right on Kittredge Street. CEA is the first building on the left.
