All About the Center for EUV Astrophysics

The Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astrophysics (CEA) opened in September, 1990. CEA represents the culmination of twenty years of research and student training in the field of EUV astronomy brought to focus by the launch of NASA's research mission, the University of California at Berkeley Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), on June 7, 1992. The CEA Science Operations Center (ESOC) controls the instruments aboard the EUVE science payload and processes its incoming telemetry data. And in February 1997, CEA assumed the EUVE spacecraft command and control operations.

Carrying out the scientific program and operations of the EUVE mission are presently the core functions of CEA, but these are far from the only ones. The mission of CEA also consists of:

1. Providing an institutional support structure for CEA researchers to carry out research in: (a) extreme ultraviolet and ultraviolet astrophysics, (b) other fields of astrophysics and space science, (c) innovative technology for low-cost mission operations, low-cost science operations, and information systems, and (d) the implementation of successful education programs.
2. Training graduate students.
3. Providing undergraduate students with the unique experience of working on an active satellite program.
4. Supporting the investigations of guest users (guest observers, archival researchers, guest technologists, and teachers) from around the world on EUVE data.

1. Operating both the EUVE satellite and the EUVE science platform.
2. Operating an EUVE Science User Support program for Guest Observers and Archive Researchers.
3. Operating a technology innovation testbed.
4. Operating a science education program with instructional, research and outreach programs.

The Center is partially supported by NASA contracts NAS5-30180 and NAS5-29298 administered by the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), and NCC2-838 administered by AMES.
