IUE Project Electronic NewsletterNASA-Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)November 1996Vol. 4, No. 9 DISTRIBUTION LIST: If you want your name to be added to, deleted from, or changed on our distribution list, please send us e-mail to or send a postcard to:
This is an electronic newsletter, edited by Jim Caplinger, primarily intended to inform the numerous remote and local users of the IUEDAC software of recent software updates, as well as let them know about news relating to the IUE project in general. IUEDAC NewsIt was discovered that the IUE merged observing log implemented at the IUEDAC on August 21st, contains incorrect observation dates. Apparently the new database system, by default, converts date entries from GMT to local time. As a result, the dates currently displayed by the IUEDAC routinesearch are off by 4 hours (i.e. 4
hours too early).
Creation of a new version of the merged log has been delayed pending the addition of recently received data from Vilspa. The corrected and updated version should be available next week. IUE Image Processing NewsNEWSIPS High Dispersion Processing StatusAs reported last month we are now processing SWP high-dispersion images through the NEWSIPS system. You are welcome to send us a list of your favorite images to priority process. There is a NEWSIPS user request Web page at http://hypatia.gsfc.nasa.gov/IUE/search/IUE_usrreq.html. Your request goes into a semi-automated system, which will send you email reports on the status of the processing. The data may be retrieved from the NDADS system once it has been archived, usually just a few days after it has been processed. We are processing with the final version of the extraction slit and associated ripple correction for SWP high dispersion. For the first month we were processing images with a somewhat preliminary extraction slit and ripple correction. Please be aware that these earlier processed images (before October 1) may differ somewhat from the final version. Please contact us if you have some of this earlier data and would like to have it reprocessed. We hope to have the capability to process LWP high dispersion images in the next few months. Later we will add the capability to process LWR high dispersion images. Processing of all images for the IUE Final Archive is to be completed by the end of September 1997. NEWSIPS Status For Low Dispersion ImagesWe have continued to process NASA SWP and LWP low dispersion data as they have become available. Out of over 38,000 images, 91 percent have been processed and are available from the NDADS system. Some of the remaining unprocessed images are flat field calibration images. However, some images have not been processed because of missing database information or other problems. We are currently working on getting those images taken care of and processed. If you need images that seem unavailable, please contact Cathy Imhoff (301-794-1470, or imhoff@iuegtc.gsfc.nasa.gov). She can check on them and in many cases fix the problem so that the images can be processed for you.We hope to have the capability to process LWR low dispersion images in the next few months. Stay tuned for further developments! PublicationsWe have copies of the NEWSIPS Processing Information Manual available (describing SWP and LWP low dispersion). We also have copies of the IUE Spectral Atlas, published as NASA IUE Newsletter No. 43, and some back issues of newsletters. Please contact Cathy Imhoff (imhoff@iuegtc.gsfc.nasa.gov) if you would like a copy.NDADS Anonymous Disk ChangeThe NASA Data Archive and Distribution Service (NDADS) anonymous disk, where the NDADS data requests are staged, is no longer available from thenssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov or the ncf.gsfc.nasa.gov
computers because of a change in the NDADS computer hardware
configuration. NDADS data requests can be retrieved from any of the
computers on the NDADS cluster:
Computer TCP/IP Address DECnet Address
-------------------------------------------------------
ndads.gsfc.nasa.gov *Cluster Alias* 15.251 (15611)
ndadsa.gsfc.nasa.gov 128.183.241.16 15.401 (15761)
ndadsb.gsfc.nasa.gov 128.183.36.18 15.402 (15762)
ndadsc.gsfc.nasa.gov 128.183.36.19 15.403 (15763)
ndadsd.gsfc.nasa.gov 128.183.36.20 15.189 (15549)
When copying your data from the NDADS anonymous disk using anonymous FTP
(anon_dir/data_dist/project_name) or DECnet copy
(anon_dir:[data_dist.project_name]) please be sure
to use one of the above listed computers. (Note project_name is
one of the NDADS project data-sets like IUE.) This does not effect
requests for data to be transferred to other computer nodes.
For additional questions please contact Michael Van Steenberg (Michael.E.VanSteenberg@gsfc.nasa.gov) or Nancy Oliversen (Nancy.A.Oliversen@gsfc.nasa.gov). - Pat Lawton Staff ChangesDr. Terry Teays recently left the project to take up a position as Project Scientist for Education in the Office of Public Outreach at the Space Telescope Science Institute. We wish him great success in his new work.Dr. Cathy Imhoff has agreed to assist the DAC staff on a consulting basis with the work carried out by Terry. She will also be able to assist users with some of the more technical questions that the DAC receives.
