This is an electronic newsletter edited by the IUE Data
Analysis Center (IUEDAC)intended to inform the numerous remote
and local users of the IUEDAC software of recent
software updates and project changes.
RECENT IUEDAC STAFF CHANGES
With the end of IUE operations a little over two
months away, the IUE project is beginning to
look towards life after IUE science operations.
To that end, Dr. Thomas Meylan has moved from the
position of Technical Supervisor of the
IUEDAC to assisting IUE project management in
the phasing out of IUE science operations.
Dr. Michael Carini, the current IUEDAC Astronomer,
has taken over as the Technical Lead of the IUEDAC.
Mike will also continue to function as the IUEDAC
Astronomer.

SURVEY OF DEGREES EARNED WHICH MADE USE OF IUE DATA
The response to our request for information on the number
of degrees which have been earned with studies using IUE
data has been fantastic. Thank you to all those who have
already responded. If you have not yet responded, and if you
or your students have earned degrees at any level where
your study involved the use of IUE data, we would appreciate
you sending the following information to us.
The name of the person earning the degree.
The degree.
The institution from which the degree was earned.
The year the degree was conferred.
We are attempting to get as exhaustive of a list as possible,
and will be sending this message out periodically over the
next few months. Any help you can provide us to obtain this
information will be greatly appreciated. You can send us this
information by replying to the source of this email notice
(news@iuedac.gsfc.nasa.gov), by calling (301) 286-7762, or by
sending a note to:

BEWARE OF IDL V4.0!!!!!
The IUEDAC Staff have determined that some IUEDAC
procedures are not compatible with IDL version 4.0.
Apparently RSI has added and renamed some intrinsic IDL
functions which now conflict with some IUEDAC internal
variable names (e.g., the routine WFIT uses an internal
variable named BETA which is now also the name of an
intrinsic IDL function.) The IUEDAC staff are correcting
these problems as they are discovered.

IUEDAC SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE UPDATES
Recent Software Changes:
26-Jun Updated versions of the following database
tables have been implemented: ALIAS
(aliases for star names), IUECOAU (authors
of IUE-related papers), and IUEJRNL
(IUE-related journal articles). The IUEJRNL
database (accessed via the IUEREF routine)
lists articles published through 1994, and
references specific IUE images for papers
published from 1978 to 1985 and 1990 to 1993.
14-Jul A new version of IDBHELP was implemented
which corrects a minor problem when FLAG
was specified as a string.
14-Jul New versions of WFIT and IUEBETA were
implemented which are compatible with
IDL version 4.
19-Jul A new version of STPAR was implemented
which prevents a problem which can occur
when multiple keywords are read from a binary
table FITS file on unix systems.

IUE IMAGE PROCESSING NEWS
IUESIPS BACKLOGS
In the last week or so, we have not been able
to keep up with rapid influx of new data, so we
have a backlog of about 80 images waiting to be
processed through IUESIPS. This is about a week's
worth of processing. We will try to handle
"priority processing" images first, but if there
are many such requests there may still be delays.
If you have an urgent need to receive your processed
data very quickly, please contact Cathy Imhoff
(301-794-1470 or imhoff@iuegtc.gsfc.nasa.gov).
NEWSIPS STATUS
We have completed processing all the SWP low-dispersion
data that we can do at this time. A number of images
still need updated database information before they can
be processed. We are working on that at this time, so
hopefully these images can be processed very soon.
In the next few weeks, we expect to receive the
software and calibration updates that will permit
us to process LWP low-dispersion images taken after
1990. Stay tuned for further updates!
