We'd like to hear your suggestions and comments on recalibration, GO/GTO data media, and Archive services. The survey is located at http://stdatu.stsci.edu/survey/ and will be running from now until January 31, 1996. If you do not have access to the World Wide Web but would like to participate in the survey, contact the Archive Hotseat for an ASCII version of the survey form. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- STARVIEW 4.2 ------------ The new version of StarView, version 4.2, includes some new features. + New Table Export Editing Features When saving the results of a StarView search into a file, you can now customize the file's width and column order. Simply hit the "View Results as Table" button to bring up the results of your search in table format, and customize the table format: Use the third mouse button on a column to delete or resize the width of a column, or use the second mouse button on a column name to drag-and-drop that column to another place in the table. When you save the table to a file, the customizations you make will be applied. + Overlay the HST Field of View onto DSS Scans StarView now allows you not only to access the Digitized Sky Survey, but to overlay the HST field of view on it as well. In the DSS screen, specify the RA and Dec of the center of the FOV, and a roll angle (counterclockwise degrees). StarView will fetch a scan from the DSS, compute the FOV, and display the field in SAOimage with the field of view displayed on the field. In addition, each search screen now has an "Overlay" button. After finding a dataset, simply press the "Overlay" button, and StarView will fetch and display that area of the sky from the DSS with the FOV overlaid onto the field. + The New Observatory Monitoring (OMS) screen. This screen facilitates the retrieval of OMS jitter files and includes the ability to search under many new and previously unavailable fields, including: o The average telescope roll angle at time of observation. o The angles between the line of sight and the Earth and Sun limbs. o The jitter amplitude limits. The Search Results screen also includes information about the line of sight to the Moon. The OMS Search screen can be found on the Other Searches screen. + Distributed StarView Platforms Distributed StarView is now available for the following platforms o SunOS 4.1.3 o Solaris 2.4 o Digital UNIX on Alpha (DEC OSF/1) o OpenVMS VAX V6.1 o OpenVMS Alpha V6.1 *** new! *** Distributed StarView is available via anonymous FTP at stdatu.stsci.edu, in the directory pub/starview, or via the World Wide Web at http://stdatu.stsci.edu/dist_starview.html. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- NEW FEATURES OF DADS -------------------- We have installed the next release of the software for DADS, the Space Telescope Data Archiving and Distribution System. Here are some of the new features that are part of this new release: + Retrieve Data Directly To Your Home Site External users may now retrieve data directly to their home site, instead of retrieving to an archive host staging disk. Guest users on stdata.stsci.edu and stdatu.stsci.edu, and users of Distributed StarView, will need to set an environment variable before running StarView to enable this feature; for Unix versions, do % setenv SV_NETDIST_OK YES and on OpenVMS, do $ DEFINE SV_NETDIST_OK YES Then start up StarView. While building a retrieval request, the Media Options screen (where you give your archive username and password) will contain some new fields for the destination and directory, and for your username and password on that node. Simply specify in these fields the nodename and directory of the machine to which you'd like your data delivered, and your account name and password on that machine. The destination information will be encrypted before it is sent to the Archive, and remains encrypted while your request is being processed. However, if you wish to augment this security, and if you have access to an incoming directory on an anonymous FTP server, you can use this feature to have the data sent there. Alternatively, you can still retrieve to the Archive host staging disk by pressing the HOST button on the Media Options screen. + PIs May Retrieve Their Own Data Principal investigators (PIs) and PI-designated co-workers will now be able to access their proprietary data electronically. Any individual who wants electronic access to his or her own proprietary data must be both a registered and an authorized user of the Archive. Registration allows access only to non-proprietary data; authorization additionally allows a PI and individuals selected by the PI to have access to the PI's proprietary data. You can become a registered user by filling out the World Wide Web registration form at http://stdatu.stsci.edu/registration.html or contact the Archive Hotseat at archive@stsci.edu. To become an authorized user, contact the Archive Hotseat. Authorization requests will be inspected very carefully. For this reason, authorization, which allows access to proprietary data, may take a little longer than simple registration. We strongly encourage PIs desiring this option to become registered and authorized *well in advance* of the execution of their program. We also encourage all PIs, whether or not yet registered users of the Archive, to participate in the Archive survey on the World Wide Web. Issues regarding data distribution and electronic access are being decided now with the help of user input via the survey. + AutoPI: New Format for GO/GTO Tapes We're using a new tool to generate GO/GTO tapes: AutoPI. AutoPI automates work formerly done by our human operators, letting them concentrate on quality control. Also, AutoPI allows us to include more information on your tapes. For example, OMS files ("jitter" files) will now be included for every observation on every GO/GTO tape. + File Extension Change: .fit to .fits Files retrieved from the Archive will now carry the extension .fits instead of .fit, to help streamline their use in FITS processing packages. + Request Names Will Be Longer Request names in the Archive will be lengthened, to include the first 16 (instead of 4) characters of your archive username. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- THE HUBBLE DEEP FIELD: AVAILABILTY OF REDUCED DATA -------------------------------------------------- CR-rejected, coadded images for each of the four passbands of the Hubble Deep Field will be made available through anonymous FTP from stdatu.stsci.edu, about the time of the AAS meeting in January. Watch the Archive What's new page for the announcement (http://stdatu.stsci.edu/whats_new.html). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- WWW ACCESS TO THE 2ND-GENERATION DIGITIZED SKY SURVEY ----------------------------------------------------- Our popular WWW access to the Digitized Sky Survey now provides an option to retrieve scans from the 2nd Generation of the Palomar Sky Survey. The 2nd Generation Survey is currently an ongoing project, so images from this survey will be loaded into the jukebox as they become available. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- UPGRADE OF STDATU TO SOLARIS 2.4 -------------------------------- In December, we'll be upgrading our archive host stdatu.stsci.edu to Solaris 2.4, to allow us to mount a much larger staging disk. This may result in a short period of downtime for stdatu, but we'll try to keep it to a minimum. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- If you have any questions or comments about the HST Archive, contact the Archive Hotseat: Internet: archive@stsci.edu SPAN: STSCIC::ARCHIVE or 6559::ARCHIVE Phone: (410) 338-4547.
