Several bug fixes are incorporated into this new version, as well as several new features: * An improved table-format screen for search results, which lets you delete and resize columns. The table also has a smoother vertical scroll. * A screen for the newly archived VLA FIRST Survey. * A facility for using custom-designed search screens. StarView 3.8 will be installed this morning (Tuesday, Jan 17) on STScI's internal computers, and on the Archive Host machines, stdata.stsci.edu and stdatu.stsci.edu. Distributed StarView 3.8 will be available by Wednesday, Jan 18. You may download the software via FTP from stdatu.stsci.edu (username: starftp, password: your email address), or through the HST Archive's World Wide Web Server (http://stdatu.stsci.edu/dist_starview.html; be sure to set the "load to local disk" option on your browser before downloading.) One change you may need to make in your environment.dat file, if you have one, is to append "other_sci_data" to the "catalogDDLList" and "initialAdHocDBs" lines. (environment.dat is a file created by StarView when you save any changes you've made through the "Options" menu. The file resides in a subdirectory of your directory called .svdata in Unix, [.SVDATA] in VMS.) The lines should then read: catalogDDLList: catalog,proposaldb,cdb1,other_sci_data ... initialAdHocDBs: catalog,proposaldb,cdb1,other_sci_data For more information, contact the HST Archive Hotseat. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Distributed StarView Export Restriction Lifted ---------------------------------------------- Formerly, exportation of Distributed StarView was limited because of some encryption software it contains. (Distributed StarView is a version of the X-StarView software that users may run on their own machines; see http://stdatu.stsci.edu/dist_starview.html.) However, this export restriction has been lifted for Distributed StarView, and the software is now available to users outside the US and Canada. Please be sure to register when downloading the Distributed StarView software. While registration is optional, it will allow us to keep you informed of new releases of StarView. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- New Archive Manual Available Soon --------------------------------- Version 5.0 of the Archive Manual will be available January 20. It is fully updated for DADS, including a complete description of the DADS database. The Archive Primer has not been updated, and will still serve as an general guide for StarView users; the Manual describes higher-level functions of StarView for the advanced user, and includes a description of the DADS database. You may request printed copies of the Archive Manual by contacting the Archive Hotseat at the address below, or see http://stdatu.stsci.edu/documents.html for more information. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- VLA FIRST Survey Archived at STScI ---------------------------------- The first 1039 coadded images from the VLA FIRST Survey's 1993 observations have been imported into the HST Archive. A description of the survey is available at http://sundog.stsci.edu/. The files are available for retrieval through StarView. StarView Version 3.8 has a VLA screen especially for the Survey, in which you can search for files covering specified areas of the sky, and mark them for retrieval. When retrieving, override the standard file options and specify 'VLA' for the archive class. For more information about accessing the files, see http://stdatu.stsci.edu/first_data.html, or contact the Archive Hotseat. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- New Archive WWW Pages --------------------- The HST Archive has a new set of World-Wide Web pages: http://www.stsci.edu/archive.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any questions or comments about StarView or the HST Archive, contact the Archive Hotseat: Internet: archive@stsci.edu SPAN: STSCIC::ARCHIVE or 6559::ARCHIVE Phone: (410) 338-4547.
